A Short Day

To Figueres, Spain – 26.1 miles, 11.3 mph, 1125 ft

Since Dex and Kylie tend to sleep a bit later than the "adults," Meg headed out "early" for bread, honey, yogurt, and juice.  I, meanwhile, attempted to catch up on the blog entries. Once again, we were organized and rolling by the crack of... 10:30.  The weather was beautiful as we climbed on the highway heading north toward France.
Unlike the extensive off road riding of yesterday, we were mostly on the paved N-11, a highway with moderate traffic but a good shoulder most of the way.

At 26 miles, we stopped in Figueres for lunch.  I'm getting the sneaking feeling that we're not going to be roughing it on this trip as much as I have during my previous solo travels -- maybe not a bad thing.  We settled for a nice three-course meal at Cafe Paris just off the main plaza.  Meg and I splurged on wine (although, in Europe, you spend as much or more on water or soda), and Meg even tried a cafe latte...with lots of sugar.

Since we were having trouble finding accommodations that night (either hotel, camping or WarmShowers) in La Jonquera, our planned destination another 12 miles up the road, Meg twisted my arm, and we decided to stay put in Figueres making an early day of it. We found a spot at the Hostal Sanmar.  Wow, after getting used to a single room with three beds crammed into it and a shared bathroom down the hall, we were living large with two bedrooms, a large bathroom, and even a family room -- all for just 63 euros.

Figueres happens to be the home of the Salvador Dali museum, which we, unfortunately, did not see. Instead, we cleaned up and caught up on homework taking advantage of the spacious accommodations.  Later that evening, we wandered around the beautiful, cobblestone streets, having dinner while playing hangman at a Google-recommended Italian restaurant  -- our first real disappointing meal of the trip.  We consoled ourselves afterward with some excellent strawberry, lemon, and white chocolate gelato.
