To Venice, Italy -- Sans bikes -- Day 1
Hi, this is Kylie. Yesterday, our friend (Dex and I refer to her as Aunt Jody), suggested a point of view from the kids. I knew someone would ask that at some point, but I didn't want to suggest it.
We got up at 7:30 to eat breakfast and catch our train. We had some difficulty finding the station leaving us a couple minutes late -- if the train were on time. Luckily, the train was late, and, instead, we boarded safely.
It turned out Dad and I were in car three and Mom and Dex in car eight. I entertained myself with a page of math and some reading, so I could play on the phone for the next train.
We got off in Bologna (Dad tried to teach me a Bologna song). The next train had a 50 minute delay, but when we got on, everybody sat in the same row and we enjoyed the next two hours to Venice. When we got there, we walked to a small dock where we boarded a water bus, which took us to our hotel.
After we got ourselves situated, we met up with Dad’s work buddy, Gary. He has a wife, Terri, and two kids, Kyle and Claire. There were hugs for everyone, and we were off towards San Marco’s Square.
On the way, we heard some loud, dramatic music and saw a crowd of people. Claire, Dex, and I went in to find six people with bored expressions, walking in a circle, and folding a piece of cloth. We bailed watching them after a minute or two and left for a gondola ride.
We wanted to fit eight people in one gondola, but apparently it was against the rules. We split into kids and adults. The gondola ride was a lot of fun. Claire told us about her old fashioned camera where the picture comes out and you wave it around in the air. We went under the Bridge of Sighs, and apparently it’s good luck to kiss underneath (but no one in the kids' boat kissed).
We then had dinner at a small pasta place. I had zucchini and shrimp pasta. Afterwards we all went out for a triple scoop of gelato.
Later, we went back to the big square. Kyle used his phone to lead us around. Because of the high tide, there were huge puddles across the square. Claire, Dex, and I played a fun and intense game of tag with lots of jumping to avoid water and people. It was a really great day!
Fabulous writing Kylie! Can't wait to hear from Dex. Keep the adventures coming!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Great job, Kylie! The pictures are spectacular.

ReplyDeleteKylieeeeeeee - GREAT JOB! Glad you are having such a wonderful time. You made me feel like I was right there with you! Great pics to help tell the story Dean! Keep the posts coming - it is such fun following your adventures. Love you all! "Aunt" Jody
ReplyDeleteHope to hear from Dex sometime too!
Wonderful writing, Kylie! We visited Venice as kids and loved our gondola ride. Our gondaleir, Nando, took us under the Bridge of Sighs and we made our parents kiss too! We'd seen the movie, A Little Romance, set in Venice...try to find it sometime.
ReplyDeleteSending hugs, Miss A
Captivating Kylie! I love hearing about your adventures from your perspective, and your dad's and mom's are not too bad either. Excellent writing- Apparently, you have had some great teachers (nod to Miss Amico). I especially liked your description of those with bored expressions carrying a piece of cloth around- sounds medieval. Enjoy beautiful Italy and those Italians!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to tell you the boys are keeping the trampoline company and we have started to play croquet in your backyard. The boys loved the story of your "pee in the bag" incident and are still talking about it. I guess boys will be boys! Keep the writing coming and Dex too! Sending hugs to you all! Ciao for now!--Claudine
Hi Claudine, Meg here. So neat to hear from you on the blog - I'll do a better job of checking this. Thanks for chiming in and feel free to send updates directly on my yahoo account. I'll see it sooner, for sure! xoxoxo Ciao Bella
