To Copenhagen, Denmark – 51.4 miles, 12.4 mph, 900 ft
Despite the capacity crowds, Dean and I are amazed at how
quiet the campgrounds are at night.
Feddet was no different, and our beach site proved a very comfy spot for
Dexter, snoozing until 8:30am.
Even with one sleepy-head, our departure this morning was brisk and we were peddling at 10:15 a.m. The start of the ride was glorious – neat farm country, beautiful wild flowers dotting the fields, horses and sheep grazing here and there, and, our new favorite landscape addition, thatched roof houses and barns. It’s straight from the land of fairy tales. Add to that an amazing blue sky with a light tailwind and you’ve got the proper setting of the beautiful bike ride we had. It was made all the more special knowing that this would be our second-to-last riding day and that we were making our way to Copenhagen, where we’d stop one more time and enjoy the capital city of Denmark.

As we approached our lunch destination, we settled on a
grocery store that was further along the route in order to get us to the
half-way point -- for whatever reason, it
is much easier for me to ride after lunch knowing that we are on the “downhill”
side of the day. Unfortunately, just as
we were approaching the town, Dex and I caught the lip of the sidewalk and
fell. Thank goodness neither of us were
badly hurt and the bike, while a little creaky immediately after the spill,
seemed fine once Dean was able to make an adjustment here and there. (Credit to all those good thoughts and well
wishers out there keeping this to such a nominal event.)
We had made reservations yesterday to stay at the Lavilla
Hostel in Copenhagen and, through the confirmation email, found out that we’d
need to give the owners an hours notice prior to arriving at the apartment. We must be getting pretty good at this,
because in the morning we had estimated an arrival between 4-5 p.m. At 4:45 we pulled into the gate of our
hostel. The second half of the day was
on a bike lane that could have held a car, alongside a two-lane road
heading to the city. Dex and I listened
to music and the kilometers sped by. The
scenery changed dramatically – no more fairy tale backdrops. Dex commented that this was as close to the
US as the scenery has been. Homes were
independent, cars were familiar, and then, to top it off, Dean and Kylie pointed
out a 7-11. Even the movie signs were for
Ghostbusters and Bad Mom’s – signs we could read!
Our upstairs room in the Lavilla Hostel was a great final
destination and after showers and a little housekeeping, we took off on foot to
find dinner. We had our hearts set on
another Thai Food restaurant, but when we got there, a sign on the door said
they had to close for the day. We
noticed a few other places that were closed until August 1. We settled on a Sushi place that also served
up a Chinese Buffet. Dean and I were a
little dubious about the combination, but it proved to be a yummy spot and the
kids were happy getting to choose from the conveyor belt of hot and cold
options that were offered. And, I’m so
pleased to announce that the Danes have cold milk and use ice a little more
liberally than their neighbors to the south.
I’ll drink to that!
I like the shot of the road rash! Wear it with pride. Love ya guys
ReplyDeleteI've been reading every single post! Thanks for all the laughs, smiles, and words of wisdom. Keep them coming! I love you guys :)
ReplyDeleteThatched roofs! Fields of flowers! Horses, sheep and tailwinds! Glad for the good things of the day. Sorry about the accident - grrr, hate the road lip. I think you are both brave to smile in the picture. Hope you are both healing up nicely.
ReplyDeleteJust getting caught up on posts again. Glad all is well. Jess, too, had a spill on a road lip when we were in Switzerland. Argh! Again..nothing but a little blood on the elbow. :) Love you all big time! :)
