To Kindred, North Dakota -- 62.0 miles, 14.7 mph, 375 ft
We are camping tonight for only the second time on the entire ride. This wasn’t, however, unexpected. As we head across North Dakota and Montana, towns will become smaller and increasingly far apart. With our limited 50 to 65 mile range, we don't always have a lot of choices.
On the plus side, the last three or four days in Minnesota and today entering North Dakota have been warm and dry. Don had a miserable day on Saturday as he fought a strong northwest wind riding into Fargo. We, on the other hand, were blessed today with a south wind which helped push our average speed almost to 15. At our rest stop in Kent, we decided to skip our original destination and instead shoot for Kindred.
What a difference a day makes. On Sunday morning, I could just barely walk. Any movement that involved my left hip often resulted in spasms. Getting in and out of bed was a major chore, and I even fell once when I missed the end of the bed I was using to hold myself up. I honestly felt like I was eighty. Fortunately, the prednisone (steroid for inflammation) and cyclobenzaprine (muscle relaxant) have done a miraculous job of getting me back on my feet. I'm still sore but not the debilitating soreness of two days ago.
By 3:00 we had made it to Kindred. We tried the phone number on our Adventure Cycling maps for the town park, but only got an answering machine. Oh well, there's no hotel in town, so we left a message and then rolled the next two blocks to the freshly mowed park complete with a few trees, gazebo, and, best of all, was situated right beside the public pool.
The fine weather persisted into the evening. Though we had picked up food for dinner in Fergus Falls, we decided to save what we had, and instead opted for dinner at the only spot in town, the Kindred Spirits Bar and Grill. It’s great to be moving again, in more ways than one.
