The Golden State

To Crescent City, California -- 54.8 miles, 12.1 mph, 2450 ft.

Hi, it's Dex.  Today, I woke up knowing that we would make it to the California state line and that we only had about ten more days till being home.  I was so excited and bouncy that I couldn't hold in my excitement.  After a good but late breakfast at Double D's, we hit the road.  Annoyingly, we had a head wind and lots of hills, but the views of the coast were gorgeous. It was a beautiful day for riding. After a little while we stopped at a beach with a few cars and RVs.

We got off the bikes and ran down to the beach. To our delight, there were tide pools with lots of marine life, like big green anemones; red, orange, and purple, star fish; small fish that blended into the sand; and a crab with a shell about eight to ten inches across.  Kylie and I found some sand dollars that hadn't broken yet, so I kept one.

After we left, we were riding along the water when I noticed some crows standing around a big black and white bird.  At first I though it was a penguin, but then it lifted its head, and I realized it was a Bald Eagle. It was huge, and it towered over the crows. We leap frogged it for a while as it frequently flew ahead and then landed. It was so cool. After twenty more hilly miles, we made it to Brookings and ate at McDonald's.

Leaving Brookings, we got off 101 and had some quiet, easy miles. Apparently, there was a fair going on because people were selling things and flying kites. We met up with 101 again when Dad said only one more mile to the state line.  I was so excited because we haven't been in California for over a year.  When we got there, we took pictures and  laughed and hugged.

The next 20 miles were pretty uneventful and long, but for the first time, we saw San Fransisco on a road sign. Then, we were shrouded by redwood trees until we got to our campsite in Crescent City. At camp, Mom and I had fun playing Pickle Ball, a version of tennis with a whiffle ball and a wooden paddle. We ate at another Subway at the nearby Walmart before getting food and snacks.  It was a fun day getting to California.
First sign for San Francisco!
