To Trinidad, California – 64.0 miles, 11.4 mph, 4550 ft.
Today got started with some excitement when Dad stepped out
of the tent to find the food bag we had filled yesterday plus Dex’s bag was missing!
At about 4 a.m. that morning Dad had seen a person riding as fast as they
could away from the tent after hearing them rummaging around outside. He relaxed when he saw our bikes were still there and went back to sleep. The first time
we noticed something gone was when we woke up.
Dad decided to look around for Dex’s things because whoever stole them probably didn’t need kid shoes or (the things Dex and I worried about most) the kinder men. A few minutes later a police officer drove by who had been called to the camp ground because a second family had been stolen from. They lost $3500 worth of electronics. Luckily, Dad found all Dex’s things thrown into another campsite plus one plastic bag of our food. (Dexter's note: Sadly, my toiletry bag was found including toothpaste and toothbrush.) No front pannier however. A little bummed, we decided to get going….

Surrounded by fog and red woods, we started our first climb
of the day. The fog seemed to encase us, so we couldn’t see anything clearly five feet away. I thought it was awesome, but I don’t think
anyone else did.
Our descent was cool but also definitely one of our bumpiest and
there was construction work so we had to stop a lot. By the time we got to the bottom, we all were
getting hungry, so we stopped at Chester's Chicken To Go and all grabbed something
to eat.
Just a little down the road, we saw four cars pulled over
next to a meadow. When we stopped we could see something like 25 elk just
grazing off to the side of the road, the closest one was only 20 feet away!
Our destination for the day was the Ocean Grove Lodge in Trinidad where we reserved a small cabin under the huge redwoods. We were all excited to get there, and afterwards Dad told us that we actually did more climbing today (4550 ft) than any of the day's riding through the mountains. Now, only nine days left to home. Wow.
